Pricing

The VPX121X has an MSRP of $180, but is typically sold for around $110. This drill/driver is one of the products in the VPX line that includes both batteries and a charger, so you can buy VPX products that don't include these items, and re-use your VPX batteries and charger. The VPX standard is only used by Black & Decker products, so you can't use VPX batteries and chargers with other tools. If purchased separately the dual-port charger costs about $30, whereas each 7V VPX battery costs about $20. The VPX was first available in stores sometime in late-October, early-November 2007 (confirmation needed).

flamesmarvin: #black_decker_vpx1212x_2_vpx_drill_driver I too have been bitten by the lithium bug. I know Black and Decker is by far the largest builder and marketer of power tools in the world. They have Porter Cable, Dewalt, Delta, and of course, Black and Decker. These tools are coming to me from Amazon. I cannot attest to the quality of use yet, but in the store, they feel great. I will have all of them at some point. By the way, there is a GREAT promotion going on as we speak. If you buy the tool without the charger/battery, send the upc and original receipt, and you get the charger/battery free by mail. The form has qty... for each product, so I'm guessing there is no limit as to how many you can receive. This applies to drill, air pump, led light, etc. If you purchase a product with a charger/battery, you get a battery. Check it out ! May 27, 08

DAVEMAR2: #black_decker_vpx1212x_2_vpx_drill_driver I PURCHASED A BLACK & DECKER VPX STARTER SET AND WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE TOOLS. THE ONLY DOWNSIDE I COULD FIND WAS THAT THEY DID NOT COME WITH A PRMANENT CARRYING CASE. WELL I DID SOMETHING ABOUT THAT AND DESIGNED A VERSATILE CASE THAT HOLDS THE STARTER SET AND MUCH MORE. Just got one for my B-Day. Feels solid, grip fits well, good balance. I have B&D 12v and 18v drills and 3.6v versapak drills and drivers. All have seen loads of work. the Versa-Paks' standard NiCd batteries were lame, but the upgrade NiMH gold Versa's have lasted years and still take a good charge. The NiCds in the 12v and 18v Firestorms suck, so I had to get the upgraded NiCds to make them usable for average jobs. The build on any B&D is questionable, but a weekend DIYer who is careful can get years out of them, and they cost much less than industrial-grade competitors. The VPX line is made in China, but so are most iPods. Don't let your kid eat them. What attracted me to them was the Lithium Ion battery pack. Since the NiMH batteries make the Versa-Paks pretty good tools for light work, I figured the extra power and longer life of Lithiums could be even better. We'll see. I know the Bosch 9v Li-ion drill-driver is probably the best one out there, but it costs it.
